girls imprisoned

Although the details about girls imprisoned for “incomplete military paperwork” frequently goes unknown, as most are unaware that there are organizations that can assist them, here are a few recent cases that have come to the attention of askanim.

u Tuesday Feb. 4, Lital bas Miriam had yet another military court hearing in her extensive saga of hearings. Chillingly, the military sought to slap her with a particularly brutal sentence. Just how long? Judging from the "compromise" that the judge reportedly directed the prosecution to consider, the military wanted to imprison Lital, not for days, weeks, or even months, but for YEARS! Apparently the military feels quite comfortably in the driver’s seat, and feels no pressure to act civilly.

u Ta'ee bas Oshrah has been imprisoned in Military Prison Six in the North for over a week due to her refusal to enlist in the army.

Another religious girl, Talyah bas Liz, continues to languish in Military Prison Four for her refusal to serve in the army. So far, she's been suffering there for an outrageous stretch of time, about EIGHT weeks total.

While imprisoned, the military notoriously uses all the tools at its disposal to break the jailed girls’ morale, physically, spiritually and emotionally.

u Unassuming immigrants, who believe they have arrived in the dream homeland, have blind faith in the state’s demands of them. Thus, numerous cases of girls’ entanglement with military red-tape are fresh immigrants.

Another religious girl, an immigrant from France, Rivka No'a bas Yehudis, has been similarly incarcerated for an outrageous amount of time, approaching TWO MONTHS in Military Prison Six. She was notified that she will get an exemption from Army service, BE"H. However, despite that exemption, they insist on keeping her imprisoned until she completes the 12-day punitive sentence handed up Jan. 30.

u Sixty six years ago when the gezeirah of girls National Service was on the table, the Chazon Ish sent a message to Reb Menachem Porush; “R’ Menachem, ihr zolt plotevin! [R’ Menachem, you should act wildly!]”  It can be debated if a gezeirah on every religious girl is more serious then multiple girls consistently in jail, or not. It can pondered if now is the time to act in a stormy manner, or not. Either way, silent complacency is definitely not an option.
